Sustainability means different things to different people. No matter what sustainability means to you I think we can all agree that if we as the green building community cannot show that sustainable design and construction make sense from an economic standpoint that the word sustainable will soon fade from our vocabulary. So exactly how does one prove that sustainable building makes economic sense? That is the precise question that Build2Sustain will seek to provide you an answer with in the coming months but here are some suggestions if you are considering constructing a sustainable building.
- Engage an attorney early in the process. Green or sustainable buildings present a wide variety of unique challenges which need to be properly addressed upfront so as to avoid costly litigation down the road.
- Properly research and investigate any new materials or techniques proposed for incorporation into your building. At Build2Sustain a great deal of time and energy will be spent properly investigating the materials which will be incorporated into the building so as to ensure that they are of the highest quality.
- Do not underestimate the power of a charette which includes members of the design team, build team, ultimate occupants, and members of local zoning, utility, and regulatory departments.
- Reach out to members of the sustainable building community. The vast majority of individuals involved in the sustainable movement are more than happy to take time out of their day to assist you in your journey and to answer any questions you may have.
- Keep checking back with us here at Build2Sustain to learn from our experience.
