I finished an excellent book a few weeks ago, Getting Green Done: Hard Truths from the Frontlines of the Sustainability Revolution, by Auden Schendler. Talk about a needed book. Too often we hear only the highest praise for sustainable building and how easy it is. It’s not. It’s different. The rules have changed. And we need to know what the failures are and were so that we can learn from them. We need to know so we can make sustainable design easy so that it does become the conventional way we design and build, sooner rather than later, much sooner. I say all this too as someone who has studied and practiced sustainable design tenets for 20 years. I have also spent a good portion of those 20 years working in practical realities of conventional design and building. I recognize the urgency. I also see and have experienced the barriers first hand. And getting green done isn’t as easy as it always sounds. As Schendler says, we are in ways hitting the “reset” button on society. If you haven’t baked a pie… Schendler starts right off with the comparison between the “…pure theorists…the PowerPoint experts who think they know all the answers but haven’t ever baked a pie…” versus the often grueling, not sexy, very dirty, often frustrating front of the line work done by those in the field. These folks confront the actual problems and solve them. In reality, these are the folks who should be giving the majority of the PowerPoints. (By the way, I am a probably an equal mix of PowerPoint theorist and front line worker; I hope at least). Getting green done… The Build 2 Sustain project seeks to do exactly what needs to be done to advance sustainable design. We will show the process and be transparent about it. We will show pitfalls and how we overcame them. If we don’t, we’ll talk about why so we can do better the next time around. We’ll also follow up for a certain time period after the project is complete to see how it is functioning once the people factor is in play. I mean, no amount of modeling can account for someone over-riding the daylight dimming system because it “just pisses everybody off,” an actual response I heard from a client a few years back about their inadequately performing dimming system which was over-ridden by a tech savvy employee. I am very excited about the project, and about getting green done. In the meantime, read Schendler’s book.
