Green Building Education Still Important
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10:09AM We are pleased to have Advisory Board member, Rich Cartlidge, sharing his thoughts with us this week. You can find out more about Rich on our B2S team page.
Today, I had a very enlightening conversation with one of my dear friends. My friend had read an article about a “net zero” carbon house and asked how it was a possibility. What was most surprising about this conversation was the fact that despite living in Phoenix, Arizona where green building has caught on, despite being highly educated, and despite knowing my involvement with the green building industry, my friend was completely unaware that such a structure was possible! So, what did I learn from her asking me? I learned that despite the excellent job that is being done by organizations such as the USGBC, Build2Sustain and others, the general public still does not understand the possibilities for the buildings of tomorrow. While a truly passive structure is above and beyond what most people will spend the time, effort, and money to construct, it is a possibility. My fellow advisory board members and I have a long road ahead of us in seeking to advance sustainable design and construction. So today I ask you as followers of Build2Sustain to seek out one individual in your life and to ask them if they have any questions about green building. Together, we have the power not only to educate our fellow citizens, but also to encourage our leaders to make our communities healthier, more sustainable places, not only for our generation, but for future generations as well.
