Fixing Bad Habits

Those of you following my twitter feed, know that I love to skate in to the office whenever possible. With all of my recent travel, the holidays, and the cold snap I hadn't been skating much. I decided to change that this morning and so I rolled my way from Astoria, Queens to midtown Manhattan, following my usual route.

One of my biggest pet peeves about the skate in is all of the wet sidewalks you come across. Maintanence staffs from buildings across midtown are (apparently) instructed to hose off their sidewalks every morning. This upsets me for two reasons.

It's a TREMENDOUS waste of water to "clean" a NYC sidewalk that will:

A) Get dirty again with the morning rush.

B) Could get just as clean with a broom.

The other reason, as a skater a wet sidewalk is the equivalent of biking on a sandy lane...brakes=not so much.

Much to my surprise and delight, however, due to the freezing temperatures this morning the water crews were stuck inside. Knowing, of course, that if they hosed off the sidewalk it would freeze causing a slipping hazard. My joy was evident to my fellow New Yorkers. I glided with ease across the wide and dry sidewalks. The morning wind invigorating me as I closed in on my destination.

Then, I saw it. One maintanence worker determined to keep up his routine (see photo) of watering a sidewalk like a flower that was never going to grow. Seen in the photo above, the sidewalk was salted, presumably to prevent icing, then hosed down, because apparently we like "clean" sidewalks" more than fresh, potable water.
