Does Sustainability equal Durability?

This is a question I found myself asking last night. My first thoughts were in the consumer goods space. Essentially, if goods were more durable does that mean, by default, they are more sustainable? People would need to consume fewer of them after all. The short answer I gave myself was "yes, provided the manufacturing methods used to make the product more durable were also sustainable." Which made me start thinking about baking sustainability into processes not just end products.

Apply this thinking to buildings and you need to look backward...not forward. I thought about the coliseum in Rome. This structure is, if nothing else, durable, it's lasted largely intact for centuries, but can we consider such a structure sustainable?

I don't think we can for one simple reason. It has no purpose anymore other than being a tourist attraction. I'm not knocking the romans/Italians here. After all, in America we knock down baseball stadiums after 40 years of service. But when we envision sustainablity today, we must envision buildings that can adapt to new uses. Buildings that should be capable of serving multiple functions over centuries, not years.

How do you define sustainability in the 21st century? Design/build pros-how long do you expect your projects to endure?

As my thinking evolves on the subject sustainability is a process to me more than a product. But I need some help-how do you define sustainability?

This is an excellent post in that it asks a question fundamental to sustainability...and acknowledges that sustainability is not a "thing" but rather a process resulting in "things" supporting our standard of living.

The "things" that we all consume, whether they be products or buildings, all have impact on sustainability and those impacts start well before construction or manufacturing...and end well beyond intended use.

Interesting question, although I end up coming out on the other side on this one instinctively.

I think to really answer the question, you would need to compare process and results of this structure and compare to other comparable structures. Today, it might only be a tourist trap, but it had a very long, storied and useful life.
